If he retires, doesn't he go on some list whereas the Orioles retain his rights, so if he un-retires, he comes back to the team?

That's my understanding. I would say that in most cases, these guys get un burned out after getting a real job for awhile. Heck, he might unretire before even getting a real job. IMO, Rutledge has a ML arm.

He might have gotten lucky and got with a rich cleat chaser.

Rutledge was on Single-A Frederick's roster, though he didn't pitch last season after retiring. His suspension begins at the start of the Carolina League season.
